How Do You Expand Your Creativity in Using Social Media?

As the ISMA team prepares for the Tuesday, March 2 teleseminar, “Leveraging LinkedIn: 5 Power Strategies to Stand Out and Be Sought Out,” with Barbara Rozgonyi, we were naturally researching Barbara’s interesting professional profile.

One of the many appealing things we learned about Barbara is her commitment to her book club. When you read Barbara’s original blog post about the club, Sharing Stories: Book Group Suggestions, you learn that she had to wait two years to become a part of this group. And just in time to update us before her ISMA teleseminar, last week Barbara posted again about her book club, Great Book Plus Reading List 2002-2010.

As a huge fan of fiction myself, I was delighted to learn that this master of social media, (who describes herself as Wired Branding Conduit; Social Media, Marketing, PR Speaker; SMC Chicago Founder; Publisher of WiredPRworks; and Mom x 3) is seriously devoted to reading quality fiction. Her book club selections (published on her website) are an interesting mix of best sellers, great literature, and experimental fiction.

The fact that Barbara makes time in her obviously busy schedule to read nonfiction books says that she values both the balance it creates in her life and the mental stimulus it provides her. Reading fiction can even be a delightful escape which lets your overloaded “real world” minds go off duty for a while, getting a respite from the demands of always being “present”.

…Which Led Me to Thinking About the Whole Topic Of Creativity And Social Media

Social media is innately creative simply because inherent in it is the capability to morph in endless ways—and this is what is critical here—ways not imagined at the time the social media effort is launched.

Have you watched Edward Boches video on the topic of “Creativity in the Age of Social Media”? Although it is about an hour long, you will find he jams many more hours of fast-talking information into the video. As Chief Creative Officer and Chief Social Media Officer of Mullen, Edward looks at social media from an agency perspective of utilizing it for clients, an approach that should be particularly interesting to members of ISMA, because so many of them are in the business of providing social media as a client service. Edward also talks about some of our favorite people including, Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV and Chris Brogan, author of Trust Agents.

As Edward Boches shares with you his 12 ways to think about using social media more creatively, you will recognize that they require letting go of  any preconceived ideas and being open to where social media can take you and your clients.

Three  very beneficial things you can do for yourself (and your social media creativity) this week…

  1. Register for the free teleseminar with Barbara Rozgonyi: Leveraging LinkedIn: 5 Power Strategies to Stand Out and Be Sought Out.
  2. Watch Edward Boches  video: Creativity in the Age of Social Media
  3. Start reading a book that is vastly off-topic and atypical for the type of reading you normally do.
  4. What Is Creative in the Age of Social Media? from Doug Winfield on Vimeo.

Thanks so much for sharing the book group list and for suggesting that people expand their creativity! A few qualifiers: credit for the title selections goes to the book group; members collectively recommend titles and make final selections. Our leader is a very organized and dedicated person. She gets credit for keeping track of the list. :)
Looking forward to watching the video and to sharing LinkedIn lessons next week!

Ah yes, not “Barbara’s book club selections,” but rather the “selections of Barbara’s book club,” an important distinction, but either way an impressive reading list. And it certainly made me want to be part of your book club but at 1000 miles away, I am definitely outside the 4-block radius.
And we are all so much looking forward to learning more about LinkedIn with you!
Thank you.
